Second Welcome

Hello and Welcome! We are Merry and Pippin, your blog moderators. We´ll be popping in and out to check how the blog is going and ask some questions to help you get all “inspired” for a new entry.
In the mean time we have a message from Mrs. Fonseca herself:
“Intro Unit: Beyond Materials…

Hello everyone! I would love to hear your first impressions on our first assignment: pros and cons of procedure for selecting text, working on the posters during your classroom time, the poster presentation procedure. Suggestions and ideas to make the porter presentation more efficient and engaging are WELCOME!”

Have a nice first entry!

  1. I personally think that selecting the text by us is the first step for having better results in an activity, why? because of the motivation involved. When texts are given by the teacher, most of the time students feel obligated with the topic they have to analyze or discuss because it was not chosen by their likes or interests and that somewhat reduces motivation during the process of the activity. Moreover, working on the posters during our classroom time was also something positive because we were not stress out thinking or planning outside the classroom. We only had to read the text that we chose and that was enough to come up with ideas for the poster analysis and so on. Finally, the poster presentation procedure for me was absolutely engaging and interactive, in fact I didn't miss the typical power point presentation and the teacher-centered class. I considered it a very autonomous activity worth do it again during the course.

  2. Probably one of the pros of this activity was related to the freedom we had when selecting the text, when designing the poster and when choosing the presentations we wanted to listent to. Most of the time we must to follow a format or simply read what the teachers want us to read, however being able to do whatever we want seemed to be motivating. I love the fact that these classes were not teacher-centered and that we did most of the work in an independent way. Another advantage was that we had the chance to learn about a new methodology that maybe we can use in the future with our students.
Finally, in my opinion there were two problems. One was that we could not learn from all the presentations and the other was the noise in the classroom. Nevertheless, these two cons can be improved.

  3. I think it was definitely one excellent strategy for dealing with large classes such as ours. It was not teacher centered and appeals to students' responsibility and autonomy. Even though the time we had for preparing was little, once we enter to work at schools we will definitely face a situation in which we will have make decisions on the spot for coping with a spoiled class.

  4. I enjoyed the activity, specifically because we had the opportunity to choose what we wanted to read and how we wanted to create the poster. We had complete artistic freedom and that is not sometime that we enjoy very often. Thought, I must say that the presentation format was a little disorganized and at times a bit confusing, but I think it has to do with the fact that it was our first time and I am sure we can do a lot better if we do it again.

  5. From my point of view, this kind of activities contributed to the development of autonomy and responsability in students, that's why I really liked and I will consider to use it in a future, since I would like to develop those characteristics in my students.
